  • The unfairly maligned Mirage, perfect city car

I just replaced my ancient Aveo with a 2017 Mirage and I love it. Averaging 39.5 mpg, mixed city/ highway (highway is the slow crawl on the 405 or through The Crush, not cruising speed). The little 3cyl/ CVT has more get up and go than I was expecting. It's not really fast but the Car & Driver writers make it sound like you can't leave a stop light without redlining it. That is not the case. The engine is not working very hard at all. The CVT keeps the revs pretty low during normal driving but it is willing to rev higher to pass. The seats are comfy and supportive. Surprising head/ leg room, my 6' wife has no trouble in it. Not too bouncy considering how short it is. And that short overall length makes it super easy to maneuver in a parking structure, or U-turn on a residential street with room to spare. Reliability will be revealed as the years tick by but Mitsubishi has a decent track record. The little Mirage gets hateful reviews from the professional "driving enthusiasts" but I'd love to see them drive their stick shift 911s and M5s on SoCal freeways during rush hour. It's a gas sipping, U-turn anywhere, park anywhere, urban commuter for the budget conscious. Which is perfect for many of us.

The transmission is obviously terrible. It holds a low, low gear all the time and the engine violently revs up. The steering is numb as others have stated. Why such an honest review? Because the car is mechanically sound. Its our 2nd mirage now, traded the 2015 DE model for loaded 2019 GT. It has better options and still gets 44 MPG.

My star rating doesn't reflect how I truly feel about this car. It loses stars because realistically it's been built to a price. It feels cheap. It's loud. It doesn't shift as smoothly as you'd expect from a young auto. The performance is lawnmoweresque (if you expect anything different from a 3 liter, then your fault). Wind pushes it around a bit on the highway. Exterior paint didn't fare well against a bike. Wheels are hard to source and expensive due to the abnormally small size. Max stereo volume can even be difficult to hear on the highway. That being said, this car has been great for me. Gas mileage is spectacular for a non-hybrid or electric (40+ mpg almost always. Suffers a bit in cold weather). Inexpensive to buy. Power locks and windows are standard. Rear wiper is a plus. Despite weak performance, it's not impossible to handle hills. Very good in snow (Upstate NY). Reliable (Only recall was resolved during routine oil change in less than an hour). Plenty of interior space despite smaller hatch area. Upgraded audio package sounds good with nice bass despite volume limitations. Ignore the experts. They apparently think everyone wants to and can afford the most refined and highest performing machines. Maybe we would all be happier in a BMW (I also own one), but some of us just want an economic route from A to B. And some of us prefer a mechanically simpler solution, rather than a wheeled box of computers waiting to malfunction. I would definitely recommend this for someone who wants a cheap commuter with some compromises. Just don't buy it expecting a Bentley.
